Alterations of the Giant Pyramidal Neurons (Betz Cells) in Brain Cortex of Rat Offspring Born from Gestational Diabetic Dams: A Morphometric Study International Journal of Morphology
Ghafari,Soraya; Golalipour,Elnaz; Golalipour,Mohammad Jafar.
A few studies reported the adverse effects of gestational diabetes on hippocampus and spinal cord of rat offspring. Giant pyramidal neurons are giant pyramidal neurons located in fifth layers of the gray matter in the primary motor cortex. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of gestational diabetes on the giant pyramidal neurons and the thickness of internal pyramidal layer in the brain cortex of rat offspring. On day 1 of gestation, 10 Wistar rat dams were randomly allocated into two control and diabetic groups. Five animals in diabetic group received 40 mg/kg/BW of Streptozotocin (intraperitoneally) and control animals received normal saline. We randomly selected six offspring of every subject in both groups at day 28, 56 and 84....

Cellular Changes in the Placenta in Pregnancies Complicated with Diabetes International Journal of Morphology
Verma,Ranjana; Mishra,Sabita; Kaul,Jagat Mohini.
Placenta is the most accurate record of the infant prenatal experience. After delivery if the placenta is examined minutely, it provides much insight into the prenatal health of the baby and the mother. In diabetic pregnancy, placental weight is higher in comparison to normal pregnancy. To study the cellular differences that might contribute to larger size of placenta, light microscopic analysis was performed on 25 full term placentas, out of which 20 were of Gestational diabetes mellitus (12 controlled on diet, 8 controlled on insulin) and 5 control group. Tissue sections were processed and analyzed. Birth weight of neonate, placental weight, vascular pattern of chorionic blood vessels and site of attachment of umbilical cord were recorded. In the...

Evaluation of a 1-h 75-g oral glucose tolerance test in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes BJMBR
Campos,M.A.A.; Reichelt,A.A.J.; Façanha,C.; Forti,A.C.; Schmidt,M.I..
In order to evaluate the performance of a 1-h 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a cohort of 4998 women, 20 years or older, without previous diabetes being treated in prenatal care clinics in Brazil answered a questionnaire and performed a 75-g OGTT including fasting, 1-h and 2-h glucose measurements between their 24th and 28th gestational weeks. Pregnancy outcomes were transcribed from medical registries. GDM was defined according to WHO criteria (fasting: ≥126 mg/dL; 2-h value: ≥140 mg/dL) and macrosomia as a birth weight equal to or higher than 4000 g. Areas under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) were compared and diagnostic properties of various cut-off points were...

RESENDE,FERNANDA B.S.; LIRA,LARISSA Q. DE; GRILO,EVELLYN C.; LIMA,MAYARA S.R.; DIMENSTEIN,ROBERTO.
The influence of gestational diabetes on vitamin A deficiency in lactating women and, consequently, in their newborn has been verified through a cross-sectional case-control study conducted with volunteer puerperal women. The control group consisted of healthy women and the test group was composed of women with gestational diabetes. One hundred and seven women were recruited, corresponding to 71 controls and 36 cases. Personal, gestational and newborn data were collected directly from medical records during hospitalization. The retinol was determined in maternal colostrum and serum by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Postpartum women with gestational diabetes were older, had more children and a higher prevalence of cesarean delivery. No difference...

Hippocampal Neuronal Apoptosis in Rat Offspring Due to Gestational Diabetes International Journal of Morphology
Ghafari,Soraya; Asadi,Ebrahim; Shabani,Ronak; Golalipour,Mohammad Jafar.
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) defined as impaired glucose tolerance affects approximately 6 % of all pregnant women who have never before had diabetes, but who do have high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. This study was done to evaluate the apoptosis in the neuronal cells in the CA1, CA2 and CA3 subfields of hippocampus and dentate gyrus in offspring of gestational diabetes at the 7, 21 and 28 d in postnatal rats. Thirty Wistar rat dams were randomly allocated in control and diabetic group. Dams in diabetic group were received 40 mg/kg/BW of streptozotocin at the first day of gestation and control groups received an equivalent volume normal saline injection intraperitoneally (IP). Six offspring of GDM and control dams, at the 7, 21, 28...

Plasma levels and placental expression of vaspin in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus BJMBR
Huo,Y.; Liu,S.X.; Song,G.Y.; Ren,L.P.; Wang,C.; Zhang,D.H..
The present study aimed to investigate visceral adipose tissue-specific serpin (vaspin) concentrations in serum and term placentas and relate these values to insulin resistance and lipid parameters in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A total of 30 GDM subjects and 27 age-matched pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT, control) were included. Serum glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, insulin, and vaspin were measured at the end of pregnancy, and homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values were calculated. Vaspin mRNA and protein levels in placentas were measured by real-time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blotting,...
